City Elections May 2007
On Thursday, May 3rd 2007, elections will be held for Brighton and Hove City Council.
Voters will choose the 54 people who will make up your City Council for the next four years.
At the last election, in May 2003, no Party won the majority of the seats. The state of the Parties at present (end of 2006) is this:
| Labour | 23 councillors |
|---|---|
| Conservative | 20 councillors* |
| Green Party | 6 councillors |
| Lib Democrat and others | 5 councillors |
* Reduced to 19 by the resignation of disgraced Tory councillor Peter Willows
How will I vote on May 3rd?
In 2003, everyone in Brighton & Hove voted for their Councillors by post. This year will be different. You will only be able to vote by post if you are registered as a postal voter. Otherwise you will vote at your local polling station on Thursday, May 3rd.
How can I check if I am registered to vote?
Phone the Council on 291999, giving your name and address. If you have moved in the last year or two, you may need to check your previous address too. If your name is not included, you will be told how to register.
How can I check if I already have a postal vote?
All postal voters should have received a letter from the City Council, requiring them to confirm that they still want to vote by post. If you have not had this letter, phone the Council on 291999.
How can I apply for a postal vote?
If you don't already have a postal vote, time is running out. You must apply to Brighton Town Hall by 18th April at the latest. Get a postal vote form from Electoral Services. Remember, you will need one form per person. See the City Council' s information page here which tells you more about Postal Voting.
What is a proxy vote?
If you won't, or may not, be able to vote at the polling station, you can ask someone else (a friend or neighbour, for example) to vote for you by applying for a proxy vote. This is useful if you may be away on holiday or business on Thursday, May 3rd - especially if you are out of the UK as a postal vote may take too long in the post. To apply to vote by proxy, contact Electoral Services as above, asking for a proxy vote form per person. The application form must be returned to Brighton Town Hall by 25th April at the latest. Again, more details are on the Council's web page.
