Tory cuts mean poorer social care for local people

Brighton and Hove City Council has been told that the quality of its Adult Social Care and Health services has dropped from a 3 star service to a beleaguered 2 stars.

Cllr Jeane Lepper

The report refers to Brighton and Hove’s performance as "considerably lower than that of similar councils."

Councillor Jeane Lepper (Labour opposition spokesperson for Adult Social Care and Health) said:

"The decline in the level of service that the council is now providing is appalling.  When Labour ran the council, we worked extremely hard with carers and council staff to improve the 3 star quality services to our city.  It is very disappointing that the Conservatives have cut corners and allowed standards to slip to just 2 stars.  They have a duty to care for the most vulnerable in our community and they are failing them in order to save cold, hard cash."

This comes at a time when Labour Councillors have been working hard in conjunction with Unions to stop the Conservatives cutting further Adult Social Care and Health services, such as learning disabilities centres.

On Wednesday 14th January Cllr Christine Simpson maintained Labour's firm stance on defending learning disabilities centres and for a second time in a row the Conservative Maria Caulfied backed down from agreeing a report that did not rule out cuts in frontline services.

Labour and Unison were very concerned about the 60 residential service users that would have received no day services outside their homes as a result of the recommendations hidden in the report.
