Labour Group push for Portslade school safety zones

The Deputy Leader of the Labour Group will be asking transport boss, Geoffrey Theobald to enforce a 20 MPH zone in an area of South Portslade.

The Labour Group will be asking the council to commit to nominate the section of highway between Southern Cross and Loxdale, in Portslade as a school safety zone at the Environment Cabinet Member Meeting on 11th December.

Cllr Les Hamilton said:

“Over 500 children use this stretch of road during school times.  The police have contacted me and expressed great concern about the traffic speeds in the area.  I first bought the dangerous roads of Southern Cross to Loxdale to the council’s attention over a year ago. It is very disappointing that the Conservative-led council has failed to act to improve the safety of this stretch of road in South Portslade.  I will continue to pressure the Conservatives to create a school safety zone in the area, which will be the first step in making the walk to school safer.”

Labour Councillor Les Hamilton requested a 20 MPH speed limit to be enforced in the area of Southern Cross and the entrance of Loxdale, over a year ago.  He will also voice the concerns of local Police Officers regarding speeding drivers in the area and the safety of the school children that attend the two schools that are located between Southern Cross and Loxdale.
