David Lepper MP, the RSPB and Sea Life Centre joined forces today to urge the Government to provide better protection for marine wildlife. To help launch this campaign in the South, and ask for public support, they were joined by a two metre tall (inflatable) puffin – one of the UK’s most charismatic seabirds – at special event on Brighton sea front.
Local Brighton MP, David Lepper, who has already declared his support by signing the Early Day Motion in support of a Marine Bill, commented, "As a member of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee which has produced a report on the threats to the marine environment and its wildlife, and as an MP for a coastal constituency, I know just how vital it is that the government introduces a Marine Bill in the next session of Parliament. I am pleased to support the RSPB's campaign"
Peter Jones, Curator of Brighton Sea Life Centre said: “We operate a series of SOS campaigns to help protect marine life around the globe and this year we are working alongside WWF, MCS, and Project TAMAR in Brazil to protect various marine animals and habitats. The RSPB’s campaign for a marine Bill is an excellent opportunity to help protect our seas from further destruction.”
The RSPB is campaigning for a Marine Bill that includes: designated marine conservation zones; a new system for planning at sea; improved licensing of activities at sea; and sustainable in-shore fishing management.
