Hove MP joins new Department

Labour's Celia Barlow, MP for Hove and Portslade, has joined the new Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills, headed by Secretary of State John Denham MP.

Celia is Parliamentary Private Secretary to Ian Pearson MP, previously Climate Change minister, who has become Minister of State for Science and Innovation in the new Department.

While she looks forward to working to improve the British education system, Celia regrets that she is leaving her position in the Department of the Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs. However, she will continue to devote attention to the issue as a member of the Friends of the Earth and the Joint Committee on the Draft Climate Change Bill.

Celia Barlow MP said, “I am very excited by the opportunity to serve in the new Department focused on education and science. By boosting science and technology programs at Britain’s universities and other learning institutions, Britain will develop the knowledge and experience to lead the world’s initiatives on programs to combat climate change such as the development of carbon capture storage programs and alternative fuels. With that goal in mind, I look forward to working on the Secretary of State’s ambitious plans to revitalize the educational system in this country to help us confront a number of looming challenges, including climate change.”
