Some of Labour's new faces for the City elections

Labour in Brighton and Hove will be fielding a full set of 54 candidates for the City elections this May. As well as many existing councillors, there are some new faces who hope to join them in the chamber in 2007.

Lisa Buckingham

Lisa is standing in Stanford ward.

Lisa Buckingham is one of three nineteen-year-olds standing for Labour in May. A student at Sussex University, she believes only Labour has the right priorities for jobs, transport and homes that younger people need. Along with Mark Maguire in Woodingdean, and Jack Kiffin in Withdean, Lisa is one of three people under 21 able to stand for election following a change in election law nationally. ‘The average age of the city’s population is 38’ said Lisa, the average age of Conservative councillors is around 60. Only Labour offers real representation for younger people.”

Melanie Davis

Melanie Davis is one of Labour’s three candidates in Hove’s Goldsmid ward.

A successful educational television producer and a Labour member for 25 years, she believes that good schools and safe clean streets are essential for a healthy community.

Mel is passionate about the environment, both globally and locally: I believe it’s time for all of us to act now to make a difference for future generations. Labour has boosted the city’s recycling rates by over 12% in the last four years and is now pledging to introduce doorstep kitchen waste recycling.’

Alun Jones

Alun (above) and Melanie hope to join Vince Meegan as Goldsmid's councillors

Alun has been a Hove resident for 24 years with his children and grandchild having attended Hove schools. Alun was a full-time trade union officer for 33 years and is currently a sales point assistant with Southern. Alun is concerned about the shortage of affordable decent housing for Goldsmid residents and is looking for continued action by the Council to improve the situation.

Daniel Yates

Daniel (above) is standing with Cllr Roy Pennington in Regency

I've always worked in the NHS since I qualified as a Physiotherapist because I believe in making a contribution to my community. That's the same reason that I've accepted the chance to stand for the City Council. I know from my time previously as a Councillor that the work isn’t easy and that trying to deliver for your community is harder than ever these days. But the challenge and the chance to deliver for the future of the city is too much to turn down.

Leo Barraclough

Leo is standing with Brendan Hanlon and Joyce Edmond-Smith in Hanover and Elm Grove

I really get a kick out of getting stuck in to improve people's lives. I lived in Hanover Street for seven years and my son went to Elm Grove school, and for me the area encapsulates so much that is good about Brighton and the people who live here. Socially aware and sociable, they care about others and their environment. We've got good bus services and decent schools but more needs to be done to cut pollution, provide better facilities for young people and tackle problems such as thuggish behaviour and dangerous parking. We can also do more to support the arts and the cultural life of the city. There's so much to be grateful for but it could be better still.

Mark Maguire

I’m 19 years old - I grew up in low-income household under Labour and have personally benefited from legislation that has been, and today is still being, passed. I have a fresh and open mind, the energy and willingness to work to help those I would be representing. Woodingdean needs action to update its facilities, like the library and the community centre, and young people need more to do for their benefit and that of the wider community.

Mark and Karen for Woodingdean

Karen Barford

I live in Saltdean with my partner and four children and my work enables local disadvantaged people to access employment. Having worked in the public, private and voluntary sectors, I have a good understanding of local social and economic issues. I feel that it is very important that we are all given the opportunity to be involved in decisions that affect our daily lives. I would love the opportunity, alongside Mark, to represent the people of Woodingdean on the city Council.

Lis Telcs

Lis is standing with Mo Marsh and Anne Meadows in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean.

Elisabeth Telcs has been a teacher for over sixteen years, and is standing for Labour in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean. “Education remains one of our top priorities, and with the new Children’s Centres across the city we are now bringing together all of the early years educational, health and welfare services under one roof to give children the best possible start in life.”

Sarah Ogden, Greg Hadfield and George Moody

Sarah, Greg and George are campaigning hard in Brighton’s St Peter’s and North Laine ward.

Pictured here outside the city’s multi-award winning new Jubilee Library, they offer a range of experience in business and the local community.

One of Labour’s pledges is to increase opening for the library - one of the most popular and sustainable in the country - to a full seven days a week. “Opening the library on Sundays will make it more accessible for people who work during the week” said Sarah.

Nicole Murphy

Nicole is one of Labour’s candidates for North Portslade.

Local nurse Nicole Murphy is proud that Brighton and Hove has been named ‘The UK’s Healthiest City’.

Nicole said, “Healthy lifestyles, lower obesity rates and an abundance of fitness services have all contributed to Brighton being voted the UK’s healthiest city”.

Malcolm Prescott

Malcolm (above) and Mark Wright are Labour's candidates in Wish

I am a partner in an organic skincare business that was started by a Brighton mum desperate to alleviate her daughter's chronic eczema. I passionately believe in a city that supports an enterprise culture and promotes affordable housing for its workers. My business has thrived thanks to support from the council by way of suitable business accommodation in the heart of the city. I have three children in local schools. I moved to Hove in '78, whilst a School Governor I introduced an eco-learning scheme and have coached a local youth football team. I can't wait for park and ride and would love to see new public transport links from North, West and East of the city to support the existing bus and train services.
