Labour to gauge reaction to communal bins

The Labour Group in Brighton and Hove moved to set up a local hotline to take complaints when the Conservative City council 'roll out' their Communal Bin scheme.

The latest bins are less easy for residents to use

Although the scheme has been rejected by many residents, Conservative Cllr Geoffrey Theobald will be introducing 500 communal bins across the City, to replace doorstep collections, starting in Regency ward and spreading through a large part of the City.  All bins are expected to be in place by July.

Residents will be able to lodge their complaints and objections to the scheme via 01273 550141 (local rate) where Labour Councillors will try to get bins moved and take up other concerns.

Labour Councillor Warren Morgan said;

“The Labour Group hotline will be there for residents that feel that Brighton and Hove City Council has not listened to them.  A significant number of people said ‘no’ to the Conservative’s Communal Bins and they were ignored.

“It is particularly concerning that the Conservative-led council have chosen a cheaper alternative to the existing bins and new bins will not have a foot pedal which will make it difficult for older and those with disabilities to use.”

Due to pressure from the Labour Group, Brighton and Hove City Council were forced to carry out a city wide consultation.  But even roads where residents were strongly against the scheme will find it introduced
