Des calls for stop on coal-fired power stations
Labour's Des Turner MP has tabled a motion in the House of Commons calling for a ban on any new coal-fired power plants that do not reduce carbon emissions.

In welcoming the Prime Minister's announcement of a big increase in funding for renewable energy, Des said: "It is right that we ensure that no new power stations are built which contribute to a further increase in carbon emissions and an aceleration of climate change."
The Early Day Motion tabled by Des reads: "That this House considers that in the light of the current state of knowledge of climate change and of the Government's response in the form of the Climate Change Bill, which will set out a mandatory framework for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, it would not be proper to license any new coal-fired electricity generating plant that does not have provisions for abating carbon dioxide emissions."
