Labour wants new places for young people in Brighton and Hove
Brighton and Hove could see new facilities for young people to take part in activities after school and at weekends, such as music, sport, dance and drama.
Local Labour MPs David Lepper and Celia Barlow have called for the city to bid for a share of funding from a new £190 million national pot. The funding comes from the government’s new ‘myplace’ programme which aims to provide new and exciting places for young people to go in communities across the country. Applications for funding require that local young people are involved in the development, design and future running of the projects.
The ‘myplace’ programme is in addition to dedicated funding from the government for youth projects in Brighton and Hove. Over the next three years, the city will receive £1,340,630 as part of the Positive Activities for Young People, Youth Opportunity and Youth Capital Funds. The Labour MPs said: “This new funding pot from the government is a fantastic opportunity for our area. We want to help with bids for funding so that young people in the city have somewhere new and exciting they can go after school and at weekends.
“The most important thing is that young people themselves help to decide what sort of facilities are provided – whether that’s a youth centre, a skate park, sports facilities or somewhere to do drama or music.
