Labour will maintain support for jobs in Brighton & Hove

Independent statistics, collated and released by the Labour Party, show unemployment rates in Brighton & Hove today and during the previous UK recession in 1992.

The figures highlight the importance of maintaining support for the economy and for those who lose their jobs at this difficult time. In Brighton & Hove the levels of unemployment shown by the figures are:

December 1992 17,647

November 2009 7,685

Nancy Platts, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Brighton Pavilion, says:

"Every job lost in Brighton and Hove is a real tragedy, for that person and their family. That is exactly why the Labour Government will continue to do everything we can to protect communities across Brighton from the recession, support people back into work and to get the economy growing again. During this difficult period, Labour is taking action to help people in Brighton and Hove back into work and supporting businesses and homeowners. Direct assistance like the business tax deferral scheme and mortgage assistance and advice will help local people."

Celia Barlow, Labour MP for Hove, says:

"The Government has guaranteed jobs and training for every young person who is at risk of long term unemployment, and I along with other MPs are giving
as much support as possible to local businesses — big, medium and small — so that they can get through this recession and make sure that people stay
in their jobs.

"Unemployment has affected many of my constituents but it hasn't risen as much as expected and a huge difference from the Tory 1992 recession is that
Government initiatives are helping people stay in their homes instead of being repossessed."
